• Driving In NZ

In New Zealand driving is on the Left Hand side – like that of the UK, Australia and Japan.

Today, New Zealand is the only country in the world with a special priority for drivers turning right. This rule states that a vehicle turning right takes precedence over a vehicle turning left.  This can be confusing but please ask our staff for clarification when picking up your rental car if you require any further information.

The use of seatbelts is compulsory for front and rear-seated passengers and children must be properly restrained by an approved child restraint of seatbelt and they must be seated in the back of the car.  If required we can easily fit a child seat to your car rental and this can be added to your order for a very small additional charge.

The use of mobile telephones whilst driving is strictly prohibited.

The speed limits in New Zealand couldn’t be simpler- 50kph (31 mph) in built-up areas and 100 kph (62 mph) in rural area, except where indicated.

New Zealand roads rarely have special facilities such as service areas or rest stops although they are well served by Petrol stations, cafes, restaurants and motels.  You will find that most State Highways pass through towns rather than by-passing them so driving is a wonderful way to see New Zealand. The only exception to this is in remote areas of the South Island – so do plan your route in advance and make sure you have plenty of fuel etc before you start your trip.

Most roads are passable all year round, with the exception of the more rugged areas of the South Island, where some roads, particularly on State Highway 6 through the Southern Alps are rendered impassable by snowfalls and icy conditions. In winter (June – August) please check to make sure you can reach your destination before you start out. In the North Island several roads are subject to flooding during heavy rain, particularly where they pass through the volcanic plateaux.

Please allow longer than anticipated for travel in New Zealand as roads can be narrow and very windy.  What may look like an hour’s drive can sometimes take double that.  Please bear this in mind when you are planning your route especially during peak season.  Here is an excellent tool to estimate travel times between various locations in New Zealand
